What is a shredder?
A shredder is a piece of equipment designed for shredding various materials. It cuts (shreds, tears) materials into small pieces.
It can be home, office or industrial and has different tasks, sizes and designs.
What is a paper shredder?
The most famous shredders are office shredders for paper. An office paper shredder is a small device that is installed in the office or at home for the purpose of destroying confidential documents.
Since business owners have a lot of information that, in their opinion, should not get to outsiders, they buy and install a shredder so that papers with such information are passed through it and destroyed.
When passing through the shredder, the papers are not completely destroyed – they are simply crushed into small particles. But this is enough to make the recovery of such documents very difficult. And some shredders make it almost impossible. It depends on the level of secrecy of the shredder.
Our company does not produce office paper shredders. Instead, we specialize in the production of large industrial shredders for solid materials.
What is an industrial shredder?
An industrial shredder is a piece of equipment designed for shredding a variety of hard and complex materials. It differs from office and home shredders in several parameters:
- An industrial shredder can shred hard and complex materials: wood, plastic, film, rubber, cardboard and even metal.
- It is more powerful and is designed for industrial grinding of very large volumes of material (tons and dozens of tons).
- An industrial shredder is much larger than an office shredder.
- It differs in design – a rotor (or two-rotor) design is most often used.
- If the office shredder is used only for destruction. It is industrial – it is successfully used in the field of processing.
Waste, passing through such a shredder, is crushed and becomes more convenient for repeated processing.
What is a rotary shredder?
Almost all industrial shredders are rotary shredders. The design of an industrial shredder is slightly different from an office shredder. In it, for grinding, most often, shafts – rotors are used. On which cutting knives are fixed.
When the shredder starts working, the rotor starts rotating along with the knives on it. Then the material (wood, plastic or other) is fed to the rotor. Knives, which are fixed on the rotor, hit the material, thus tearing and shredding it.
There are single-rotor, two-rotor, and multi-rotor shredders.
What is a twin-rotor or multi-rotor shredder?
Often, industrial shredders have not one rotor, but two or more. Such shredders are called two-rotor or multi-rotor.
This design is used for grinding the most hard and complex materials. That is, such shredders are currently the most powerful and most durable.
When there are, for example, two rotors, they rotate towards each other. Accordingly, the knives rotate in the same way – towards each other.
This contributes to a more effective capture of the material and a stronger pressure of the knives on the material. As a result, even strong and hard materials cannot withstand pressure and are crushed.
What is a clamping mechanism?
If the material is light, rounded or hard and it bounces off the rotor, then in this case the clamping mechanism, which is equipped with industrial shredders, will help.
With the help of a clamping mechanism, the materials are tightly pressed to the rotor and crushed. The pressure force of the hydraulic pressure is adjusted automatically and depends on the degree of resistance of the material and the rotation of the main shaft.
In case of overloading and extreme pressure on the cutting shaft, the clamping mechanism automatically stops the supply of material. Then, when the pressure is reduced – the attempt is repeated to achieve the final grinding.

Drive unit
We equip our equipment with various drives
In electromechanical drives, an electric motor is used, which drives the rotor through a mechanical transmission. For example, through a belt transmission or gear mechanism.
The hydraulic drive works on the basis of fluids that transmit pressure to a hydraulic motor, which in turn rotates the rotor.
A high-torque drive uses power reducers to transmit large torques to the rotor, allowing heavier rotors to be driven.
Each type of drive has its own advantages and disadvantages, so when choosing, it is necessary to take into account the grinding material, operating conditions and requirements for the crusher or shredder.
Electromechanical drive
In most cases, single-shaft shredders are equipped with an electromechanical drive. Power is transmitted using a standard engine, a specially designed PGR gearbox for Ecopolymer and a power belt. The speed is adjustable.
Hydraulic drive
Hydraulic drives from BlackBruin (Finland) do not have a gearbox and are therefore particularly insensitive to many impurities. Speed and torque can be adjusted without current surges.
This type of drive provides high torque at low kW consumption. The speed can be adjusted using the regulating pump.
High torque drive
Baumüller’s high-torque multipole synchronous motor is made in Germany. It is characterized by insensitivity to foreign objects.
Without gearboxes, the drive is resistant to shocks and vibrations and thus has a particularly long service life – even when grinding complex material flows.
Gearbox
Durable and reliable PGR and Tramec gearboxes
A waste shredder is a complex technical device in which great forces act on the gears of the reducer. To ensure a long service life of the shredder and its reliable operation, the Ecopolymer company uses high-quality PGR or Tramec reducers.
These are well-known manufacturers from Turkey and Italy, who use high-quality materials and production technologies in their work. This allows you to guarantee high reliability and durability of the reducers, respectively, and the entire shredder as a whole.
Compared to Chinese-made gearboxes, which can be short-lived and unreliable, choosing PGR or Tramec gearboxes is the optimal solution to ensure the efficient operation of your waste shredder.
Rotor and cutting technology
Correct selection of the rotor and cutting technology
The rotor is a key component of the shredder and its design may vary depending on the type and model of the equipment, as well as the material to be shredded.
The speed of rotation of the rotor can also be adjusted and depends on the material and production conditions.
Correct rotor setting and the use of optimal cutting technology are critical factors in achieving the best grinding result.
Rotary knives
The rotor is equipped with cutting blades that can be adjusted or replaced depending on the needs of the grinding process.
Cutting knives come in different sizes and shapes. They are either welded or screwed to the rotor.
Especially important: precise adjustment of the cutting gap between the cutting knives and counter knives. This is where the actual shredding takes place – similar to cutting with very large scissors.
Ecopolymer has extensive experience in selecting the best components for each type of material to ensure maximum efficiency and durability of the equipment.
We guarantee the quality and reliability of our material shredding and destruction equipment.
The mechanism of pressing the material to the rotor
Pressure pusher
Why razor-sharp blades mounted on a rotor and many kW of drive power, if the material to be shredded does not reach it at all?
This is what the pressure pusher is for. A properly adjusted pusher significantly increases the shredder’s performance.
Tight fit and comfortable control
With the help of hydraulic pressure, the pusher moves horizontally back and forth, pressing the material against the cutting rotor.
The design solutions used by us ensure the exact trajectory of the pusher movement.
It is possible to control its movements manually (by pressing buttons), automatically or in cycles.
The hydraulic system ensures long-term operation of the pusher and absorbs shocks, which makes the system even stronger.
Oscillating pusher
Material feeding with the help of an oscillating pusher makes the shredder particularly compact, simplifies maintenance and provides more aggressive material capture.
Optionally, the pusher can be equipped with a nozzle, which will further improve the material supply.
Mesh for filtering material
Different screens for different faction
A mesh (screen) fixed around the rotor determines the material size (fraction size) to be achieved.
As a rule, the larger the diameter of the holes, the coarser the crushed material.
Ecopolymer offers the following screen designs for shredders and crushers: round hole, honeycomb, kidney, zigzag.
Additional strengthening of the structure
Reinforced design for heavy operating conditions
For processing highly abrasive materials, Ecopolymer shredders can be protected with various additional options. They help reduce wear and tear, equipment downtime, and maintenance costs.
For example, the greater thickness of the frame walls makes Ecopolymer shredders particularly strong.
The rotor can be reinforced with a Vautid carbide coating, and the screen can be made of Creusabro wear-resistant steel.
To protect the cutting knives from the impact of solid objects, you can choose large knives with a blade length of up to 130 x 130 mm. Vautid carbide coating can also protect knife holders.
